A Dog’s Life. How a Rescue Pup Stole Our Hearts

IMG_8054

Every dog has their day. And two years ago, Jelly, The Precious Puppy, had hers. Only; it appears the humans that inhabit the space ~with said rescue~ are really the lucky ones.

Adding a four-legged friend to our home was a decision that did not come lightly for me, as the matriarch (maid, caretaker, chauffeur, nurse, teacher, coach) of the house. I knew.  When it came to upkeep, I would be the one that would be in charge.  This wasn’t my first rodeo, after all.

Truly having been living in a fog for several years with two kids with hearing loss, multiple military deployments, moves and countless responsibilities (not to mention god-awful 4AM wake-ups for many years straight)… I just didn’t think I had it in me to have ONE MORE thing to take care of…

The people I live with, however, were relentless. It was a full court press for well over a year. I finally caved and agreed to start looking.

We made countless trips to shelters and actively searched rescue websites, but couldn’t seem to find the right fit; we were searching for a medium-sized, more “mature” dog that might already have some manners.  Then…

Puppy pictures popped up on our favorite shelter’s website @TheBarkingLot. Be still, my heart.  It was O-V-E-R!

Jelly, The Precious Puppy, is hands-down the weirdest dog around. With ears that have a mind of their own, she came to us with absolutely no manners and the legs and paws of a Great Dane. {LOL}  She’s been known to eat a Stance Sock whole and shred the latest issue of the Marine Corps Gazette.

As I suspected, I shoulder the majority of the grunt work. But, watching my kids light up in her presence and express their unconditional love is EVERYTHING.  She’s taught us all to have more patience and acceptance. Like the two littles I live with, this dog is certainly far from mainstream.

Every dog does, indeed, have their day. And, Jelly is certainly having hers.
